The 2019 Hong Kong protests are an ongoing series of demonstrations in Hong Kong triggered by the introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill by the Hong Kong government. If enacted, the bill would have allowed the extradition of criminal fugitives who are wanted in territories with which Hong Kong does not currently have extradition agreements, including Taiwan and mainland China. This led to concerns that the bill would subject Hong Kong residents and visitors to the jurisdiction and legal system of mainland China, thereby undermining the region's autonomy and Hong Kong people's civil liberties.

The 2016 French labor reform protests are against the proposed labor reforms known as the El Khomri law or Loi travail, these reforms would revise France's Labor Code with the aim of making the country's labor market more flexible. Among the changes set out in the legislation, the new labor code would make it easier for companies to lay off workers, would reduce overtime payments for hours worked beyond France's statutory 35-hour workweek, and would reduce severance payments that workers are entitled to if their company has made them redundant. The draft legislation was met with public opposition, leading to strikes and demonstrations organized by trades unions and student groups. A broader protest movement, Nuit debout, arose within the context of opposition to the legislation, with the aim of "overthrowing the El Khomri bill and the world it represents". The Narita airport project was, at the time it was planned in the ’60s, one of the biggest public-works projects ever attempted in Japan, but it ended up only a third as large as originally envisioned. That’s because the farmers whose land was seized for the airport resisted. The airport’s opening was delayed for years, its size and functionality (only one runway until 2002) seriously reduced, all because a handful of farmers wouldn’t budge.
