The World Trade Organization (WTO) held its Third Ministerial Conference in Seattle from November 30 to December 3, 1999. Tens of thousands of protesters managed to halt the summit with nonviolent tactics (such as blocking roads to the meetings by sitting down in the street), protesters focused on issues including workers’ rights, sustainable economies, and environmental and social issues. Police responded aggressively to disperse the protesters, using chemical weapons, rubber bullets, and conducted mass arrests. The week of protests became known as the “battle in Seattle”.
